One is against critical thinking. The other is against a corrupted system that enables fascism.
Look, there isn’t really a word for “Anti-University Aristocracy,” and that hastily put together moniker does not come trippingly off the tongue. But our culture and personal bigotries against the poor have made us believe that Anti-Intellectualism is when you are against universities, where people go to learn critical thinking.
This…is not at all the truth. Anti-intellectualism goes far beyond the university, and I believe is best embodied by reality television, which yielded our entire, horrid culture.
Raise your hand if you have a college degree and have spent two days straight watching Cake Boss?
The university, on the other hand, purports to be a place where you learn critical thinking, but is, for most people, a four year, hot-young-adult-summer-camp…with a lot of reading and writing attached.
And it costs, like, you know, hundreds of thousands of dollars. And anyone who is ANYONE goes to college. And if you don’t, you must be, like, stupid or something. And no one will hire you. Because you just don’t get it! You dumb hick!
Now, listen: I am in favor of a hot-young-adult-summer-camp. I think it important for young people to recite poetry to one another and fuck a lot. It’s part of this whole thing, man.
But we don’t call it that. We call it a university, and at the end of the day, it’s extortion, and its only purpose is oppressing the poor. There. I fucking said it. I apologize to all of my academic friends and relatives. But it creates the class divide and is responsible for this fascist turning point. Yes, I fucking said it. Your job seems to be professor. Like Jesus seems to be a holy man who loves you. But you are bringing lambs in for the slaughter. You are to the University what Jesus Christ is to Opus fucking Dei. The draw.
Yes, I fucking said it.
I am not talking about what a university system has been or can be or will be. I am talking about what our American university system IS. Today. And 20 years ago, when I was in college.
I am also not talking about what you personally got out of it. But the university has only one standard: that your attendance results in hundreds of thousands of dollars. You do not have to be smart or hardworking to get through it. You don’t ever have to truly critically think once. You only have to give them all of your money and uphold the culture.
This is different from scientology how?
Cults always have philosophy and discussion and sex and good drugs and cost a lot of money. But what they don’t allow is questioning the cult.
How we do employment and wages is directly tied to what this university cult thinks of you. Which I just, you know, think is fucking wrong.
But our collective belief in this University system–that it breeds scholars and is for educating people in thinking broadly–for to go to university is to be educated, and anyone who doesn’t go is not educated–makes us believe that poor people are stupid. That those lacking college degrees are stupid.
I dropped out of college after four years with a bonus semester to go. I said, “I did my time,” and left for Chicago. Because to go to college and critically think is to look around and know the thing is a scam from top to bottom. From the faculty who are given nonsense task after nonsense task, and worked through political bullshit until there is no time for learning, (and by the way, you now make minimum wage, “professor”); to the students who, at this point in time, do not even read full novels. They do not read fiction. They do not read. ; To the cost; to the horrible raping fraternity system; to the fact that the day I decided to drop out was the day they taught us how to read a map–a basic map, with a key, like you learn in fourth grade–and the other students kept asking me for help because they didn’t fucking know, and we were in college–adults— it was obvious that excellence and critical thinking and innovation were not the point–JFC how was it possible we would both end up with the same piece of paper that says “You’re smart!” on it–
But the endless hoop jumping to get the money for college—
Like, fuck you all.
The emperor has no clothes. The emperor, in this case, is the university system. And we have a very, very serious Anti-Intellectualism problem.
The people are being made stupid. And the Universities are part of that.
They do not separate us by intellect, or by ability when they say “College grads” and “Non college grads.”
It is only money.
If you’re in, you’re Aristocracy.
If you’re not, you’re shit.
The universities are only tools of fascism–unless universities are free.
It’s only reading, writing, talking, thinking, working, tinkering–
You can do all of this with a piece of paper and a pencil.
Make it cost less. You fucking geniuses.
