There’s so much more to SmutMag than the digital space. In fact, a huge part of our mission is to help people ABANDON THE INTERNET–as we firmly believe the endless scroll is the enemy of art. That means there is a whole lot coming out of SmutMag that you never see–including zines, live performances and many other zany shenanigans you just had to be there for.
When SmutMag began, the goal was to find ways for creators from all backgrounds to find offline space to create. This is still central to our mission (though we’ve gone through much trial and error to determine just how to do it.)
Our first experiments were with Print on Demand Magazines. Here, GIFS were turned into flip books, movies turned into written erotica, and art and pornography mixed together happily on the same pages.

zine marketing
Cultivating community in your own back yard is competing SmutMag champions wherever we can. Art and performance is of paramount importance to creating stable and crime free towns, cities and neighborhoods. The act of coming together in the same place and time to ponder the same questions is how fellowship, kinship and democracy are built.
That’s why we choose to market through zines. It interrupts the algorithm stranglehold on what gets scene and what gets disappeared. It places what is happening digitally in real physical space. But most importantly, it’s a fun surprise you have to leave your front door to find. “Have you seen this yet?” is a conversation starter for even the most shy of people. This is how you make real connections–as opposed to the internet’s thin and artificial ones.
Zine news, serials, bursts of art
Beyond our marketing, there are some things that just cannot be captured online. Zines allow us to put out vital content that is important to our community, and also speak openly and anonymously in a way the internet has never truly afforded. SmutMag has produced story serials, Gonzo news reporting, and fits of art, music and ranting in zine format for the past year, and we don’t see ourselves stopping now. We also don’t see ourselves being particularly “consistent” about it. We show up where we’re needed. The great thing about zines is, no one disappears you if you don’t put one out every hour. It’s great. We recommend it.
