Almost there

Behold! A window!

This window was left over from a different construction site. In fact, a lot of the materials have been gotten from other construction projects. You can quite a lot done, when you diligently go through trash, and pay attention to what other people are doing. The construction industry is a major contributor to landfills. Grabbing pieces to put into your forever home is by far the best way to keep construction waste out of landfills. And in a time when obtaining housing is so expensive, repurposing materials is imperative for keeping housing costs down.

When all is said and done, this shed will cost about $2,000. Which isn’t bad for something built with extreme care and quickly. And in the end, this construction will save me renting a bedroom for as long as this shed lasts. Considering I was paying close $2,000 per month to rent, this shed is truly life saving. And pursuing the arts would simply not be possible without it. While it still has a long way to go–insulation, sheetrock, plaster, paint, siding–what I have here is my home. And it will only grow from here.

Right now, my goal is $5,000 to make this place acceptable for modern living–as in, having electricity and a toilet.

Soon, a trailer my neighbor found for free will be on my property, and will provide me with a propane stove and fridge and will act as a kitchen. But a propane generator and NSF approved composting toilet will make this place suitable for company, so I no longer have to wander the forest like Bigfoot, alone.

In the meantime, I’ve been busy setting up SmutMag radio, so that by the time this is complete, I already have the infrastructure in place to have a forever venue to go with my forever home.

It’s hard for me to even think about what it will mean when I have all systems go and do not have to be fearful of not having enough money to stay in my home. It will mean that I can put my time and resources into doing the best work possible, without having to be pleasing to corporations, landlords, or any of the other people who care more about their bottom line than what is good for society.

SmutMag.Art and SmutMag Radio or both places that like to mix the art with the smut, the high with the low, the comedy with the tragedy. The value is placed on humanity and revealing our humanity–not on popularity or algorithms. The value is on consistently good work, not consistent production. This focus is for a few reasons. 1. I feel bad when I do work that I think sucks or is untimely. 2. Consistent production yields inconsistent results. 3. It’s a far better long term strategy.

But it’s a pretty shit short term strategy. This is part of how poor people are barred from the arts: It takes too much money to sustain yourself to take on the years necessary to build an audience based on appreciation and not fear. (“You won’t believe your ears! What does x controversy mean for your CHILDREN???”)

But at SmutMag, we’re (you and me) proving that the people do want a better way forward for artists; people are not ready to chuck sex out of their lives, but instead want better ways to enjoy the titillating; that people are capable of appreciating more than one side to a woman who talks dirty; that life does not have to be as expensive as the powers that be would like to make it; that a tremendous amount can be accomplished to build a better arts scene on very little, if only we jump in and try.

So much of what makes the things I do seem frightening to people is that others are not doing it–or are doing it in such unsupported ways that they are made to fail. I am not the first person to camp on my lot, for instance. The woman who owned it before me camped for 2 and a half years on the property before selling it. Unfortunately (very unfortunately), she had some mental health issues that put her at odds with the neighbors. But my shed could not have been built without the help of my neighbors.

But if the woman who tried before me had a road map–had someone who had done it before–she may have been able to get there, even in spite of her problems. It is a terrifying thing to try something new when you have no resources and your brain is also attacking itself. And having no resources also causes your brain to attack itself. This shit is hard. And I’m incredibly fortunate that I am doing this now and not ten years from now, when everything hurts more. I’m fortunate that I’ve spent my life talking to people, and so could get them on my side. I’m fortunate that I’m able and, however nuts and sometimes unpleasant, am not burdened with being unable to connect with people. I am extremely lucky.

But my plan is to use the luck I’m currently experiencing to its fullest, so that not only will I have a home to pass on, but the story of how I did it, and what needs to happen for others to do it, too.

The housing crisis will be solved by the people experiencing it. The politicians have made it clear they have no intention of fixing it (until, perhaps, we really squeeze them and make it clear their jobs are in deep jeopardy if they don’t). There is no one who will declare the arts to be important but artists. And it will be the artists and patrons together deciding how arts funding works.

So much has been accomplished, and we can’t have it be in vain. To get this shed up, it has taken every dollar. But it won’t take much more to turn it into a real home, and make it possible to truly keep my artistic practice sustainable.

That’s why, I hope you will invest in bones today. And there are a lot of ways that investment comes back.

If you invest 50 in bones today:

You can get one of the following:

A ten minute custom audio

Access FOR LIFE to the erotic audio archive (good through January 1).

A SmutMag radio tee shirt

Have yourself or your business promoted on the air

Get a 15 minute phone sessions

Sponsor an album for daytime play (and a shout out to you or your business)

Have me be a guest on your podcast, album or other work (limits apply)

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

With SmutMag Radio, the possibilities have increased so much. And of course, you can also hold onto your bones and save them for a commission project or something bigger down the line.

Im currently working on an album about sexual tension, told from the point of view from my dominatrix character, Marla Maven. If you enjoyed Abandon, or my other albums, I’m excited to show a whole new dimension. And SmutMag Radio is where it will premiere.

Then in the SmutMag podcast, I give you the behind the scenes of all that I’m working on. In between, you get a nice break from me and get a chance to dive in deep with musical artists of magnitude.

But I’m most excited about the prospect of collaborating with other artists.

There is so much happening here, and it isn’t at all possible without you. Without you, everything comes to a grinding halt. But with you, it takes very little to leap forward

I’m asking SmutMag supporters to invest in $50 worth of Bones today (1 dollar = 1 Bone) and help make this infrastructure stable.

And if that’s not in your budget, any amount helps–and builds over time. You never lose your Bones.

Thank you for everything! You save my life, and you make the future hopeful! 🙏
